Transcript

Hey, so this is pretty cool.

NASSP just published my article on classroom walkthroughs in their Principal Leadership Magazine.

So this is the September 2023 issue.

This is coming out now.

So if you're a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, you'll get this in the mail soon, but you can also read it online for free.

And we talk about why it's so important to get into classrooms and ask the right questions.

We talk about why we can avoid putting people on the defensive and really ask good how questions.

There are 10 questions here.

that can really get you talking about evidence and these are open-ended questions that make it a lot easier to get into just a good productive feedback conversation so check those out we also talk about why visiting classrooms more often lowers the stakes and just makes this a lot less stressful for everybody and it's okay if any one visit doesn't yield just incredible insights, right?

Not every visit is going to be super evidence rich and that's okay.

We talk about differentiating your feedback and really there are three roles that you can play.

We call it the directive role, the boss.

We call the reflective role, the coach and the reflexive role, we call that one the leader.

So check that out.

I also talk about why the feedback sandwich is not a great format.

We wanna avoid this kind of artificial compliment, suggestion, compliment feedback sandwich.

This is not a great structure.

Instead, you just want to have an open-ended, genuine conversation, and that's going to give you decisional information.

It's going to give both people in the conversation useful insights that they can use to make decisions about teaching and leadership.

So big thanks to NASSP for publishing that article.

You can read that online now at the link on your screen, or you can read that in the upcoming print edition.
